How does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is a 2000+ year old ancient healing practice with foundations in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Acupuncture is insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points and/or into tight muscles around the body (also known as dry needling).

Acupuncture points were believed to be connected by meridian lines that conduct energy around the body known as qi (pronounced 'chee').

The meridians have since been found to match the many nerve and blood vessel pathways found in the body supporting all bodily function.

When acupuncture points are stimulated with needles, it's thought to create a local reaction to support blood flow and stimulate/calm local nerves to support normal bodily functions. Acupuncture has also shown to trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body such as endorphins and other hormones, proteins to support improved blood circulation to ease muscle tension, reduce inflammation and promote a healing response.

The holistic treatment style of Chinese Medicine is different from a western approach. An acupuncturist will look at how each body system contributes to the functioning of the whole.  In this manner Chinese Medicine aims to treat both the local problem as well as working on the deeper cause(s) of dysfunction to try and optimize the body to find a longer term solution.

Needles are tiny not much thicker than a hair follicle.  With trust and communication with your therapist most clients find acupuncture a very relaxing and pleasant form of treatment to receive.   Ideally needles are inserted slowly and carefully with the pace of the body, in this manner they should not create pain. Feedback with your therapist is welcomed and encouraged to ensure the experience is as pleasant as possible.

While all the mechanisms of acupuncture are still being studied, it's considered to be a safe and natural therapy supported by millions around the world.  Why not try it for yourself for a different perspective to understand your health.
